Serenely sited on the tranquil eastern banks of Carter’s Creek where it flows into the Rappahannock River about 12 miles north of its confluence with the Chesapeake Bay, is our quintessential American village.   John Smith explored it first in 1608.   Not long after, plantation owners came to grow and export tobacco to England via the bay and Atlantic Ocean. Water’s edge villages, like Irvington, quickly emerged along creeks, rivers and estuaries – less than 60 miles from Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg.  Our rustic village of about 500 residents reflects colonial coastal “Americana” at its best – and it’s all within an easy drive of Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, Baltimore – Annapolis, Richmond and Hampton Roads.

Irvington has much to offer. One may observe osprey, eagles and herons nesting and hunting along Carter’s Creek; watch sailboats racing; gather locally grown flowers, vegetables, and folk art from the town’s award-winning Farmers Market; dine on fresh fish, savor Rappahannock River oysters; feast on famous Chesapeake Bay blue crabs; sample medal-winning wines from the village vineyard; learn the importance of the steamboat by touring the Steamboat Era Museum – conveniently located next to the town’s Commons.  Hear concerts, play tennis, watch children frolic on the playground, use free Wi-Fi, read and relax on comfortable park benches, take in ongoing events at the gazebo and simply enjoy!  Walk or bike Irvington’s residential area of architecturally diverse homes, many of which are entered in the Virginia and National Register of Historic Places.  Shop, dine, sip coffee, tea or smoothies, and enjoy homemade ice cream right in the center of our welcoming town.

Stay at one of our two nationally recognized inns or nearby B&B’s, charter a local fishing or tour boat, see beautiful creekside homes, gardens and gorgeous sunsets; take sailing lessons from one of the East Coast’s premier sailing schools; or play golf on two championship golf  courses.

There’s even more – visit numerous boutique shops, galleries and antique stores; take a free trolley ride (May – September) to nearby Kilmarnock and White Stone  or drive to these delightful towns that are less than five minutes away and offer ample parking, convenience stores, auto repair shops, gas stations, emergency medical facilities and a general hospital. Numerous churches, civic clubs, AA and other support organizations are available to all.

Coming by boat?  Irvington makes it easy. Carter’s Creek enjoys deep and protected waters and has several marinas offering transient slip rentals for boats of almost any size draft.  There are two boat repair yards with heavy lift capability and boat brokerage firms.  National and local racing events are hosted by the local yacht club, which offers reciprocal privileges to many sailing clubs up and down Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic seaboard. One of the largest Cape Dory Typhoon fleets in the world is moored in Irvington.
